- 1-8 or 8-1 Couplet: The 8th Triad is all about sacrifice. But the critical issue is, “Who or what gets sacrificed?” Roughly one out of every 12 people will have Scorpio on the cusp or within the 1st House creating the 1-8 combination. But this combination can show up elsewhere – Mars in Scorpio, Aries on the 8th House, etc.
The sacrifice can be of money and/or materials. Cutting down trees for the lumber to build a house is sacrificing the trees. Putting money in savings fro retirement is a sacrifice of today’s money in order to be use it in the future. Any insurance purchased to protect resources (home, health, fire, life, auto, etc.) is a sacrifice today for a future recovery should it be necessary.
Using resources to build or manufacture any product also sacrifices the resources today for the future gain from the assembled or forged products. This is a ‘transformation’ which is a key interpretation of the 8th Triad. Even investing is a form of transformation in that the initial investment is intended for growth. An example might be planting an orchard or some other crop for the anticipated harvest later. Investing in a home or investing in stocks or bonds is similarly a sacrifice of resources today for an anticipated future benefit from growth. This, too, represents a ‘transformation’.
Adding the 1st Triad means that the person (‘self’) is involved with the transforming activity. The person could be involved with insurance or construction or securities or real estate. Any type of manufacturing from automobile assembly to baking bread is a transformation of raw materials or components into a finished product.
DHARMA: This person sacrifices self for the benefit of others. Heroes and martyrs exemplify this highest gift given by one person to another. Yet, the most often implied expression of the 1-8 Couplet is a ‘transformation of self’. Ultimately, we all must be transformed spiritually, and for that to happen, there must be a transformation of self. Another common attribute for the 1-8 Couplet is loyalty. ‘Commitment’, suggested by one of our students, is another good word for the 1-8 Couplet.
KARMA: Anyone who sacrifices others for the benefit of self adds karma. Criminal acts exemplify this. Additionally, there is usually a physical factor involved with the 8th Triad. The 8th Triad means ‘power’ and the karmic 1st Triad can mean anger and fighting. But it can also mean powerful manipulation of others.
The karmic potential is physical abuse, even sexual abuse or murder. At its root, the 1-8 couplet is an abuse of power. Finally, the 1-8 could mean ‘self death’ meaning suicide.
PHRASES: The 8-1 couplet says ‘powerful self’ which is unclear in regards to being dharmic or karmic. The implication of ‘powerful action’ is also unclear, but hinting at aggression would be karmic. Other mundane 1-8 examples combine ‘fire’ with ‘power’. Steam power traditionally has come from burning wood or fossil fuels. Lasers can be incredibly powerful, and they are merely highly concentrated and focused beams of light which is ruled by the 1st Triad. A mirror is also part of the 1st Triad, and mirrors can make powerful telescopes. At the other extreme, a superb lens could make a powerful microscope. Even our own physical power comes from burning calories. Molten lava is ‘powerful heat’. A blast furnace creates ‘powerful heat’.
As with all couplets, the above descriptions are not exhaustive, and they will be augmented as new data is brought forth.
